Brooke Henderson earns low Canadian and low amateur honours finishing tied for 46th
Canadian Pacific donates $1.1 million to Children’s Health Foundation in London
LONDON, Ont. (Golf Canada) – After a two-year wait that included 27 top-10s since her last win, So Yeon Ryu broke through Sunday at the inaugural Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, holding off one of her best friends Na Yeon Choi (21-under) by two shots with a 3-under 69 to get her to 23-under-par for the championship.
“I’ve been waiting and wanting it so much that I really cannot feel anything right now,” said the 24-year-old South Korean. “It’s always good to be the champion.”
Ryu’s 23-under tournament total is five shots better than the previous Canadian Women’s Open record in relation to par. Meg Mellon held the previous record at 18-under set in 2004 at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ont.
Despite holding the competitive course record at London Hunt and Country Club (63) and the Canadian Women’s Open record, Ryu was slightly disappointed she was unable to threaten Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA Tour record of 27-under.
“Yeah, I’m a bit disappointed I couldn’t reach the record but it still feels good,” she added. “ I still have the tournament course record, and it still feels really great.”
With the victory, Ryu picks up her third career LPGA Tour win and first since the 2012 Jamie Farr Toledo Classic. Her 23-under total ties the best score in relation to par on the LPGA Tour this season.
Inbee Park finished alone in third at 18-under-par and celebrated Ryu’s third career win on the 18th green by helping to shower the champion with champagne once the final putt dropped.
“I’ve been waiting so long for the champagne,” Ryu added. “I was ready to get champagne. I put champagne on Inbee maybe four more than five times, but finally she gave it to me so it feels great.”
Canadian amateur sensation and Team Canada member Brooke Henderson won low amateur and low Canadian honours – winning the Marlene Streit and Sandra Post Awards. After missing the cut at the past two Canadian Women’s Opens, the Smiths Falls, Ont. native made it four for four in 2014 LPGA cuts made with a final round 1-under 71 to finish T46.

As part of their charity fundraising activities, CP stepped up to encourage players to make birdies on the 17th hole during tournament play by offering to donate $5,000 for each birdie made to the Children’s Health Foundation in support of paediatric heart health programs.
On Sunday, 13 more birdies by LPGA Tour players raised the total birdie count to 70, good for $350,000 for charity. CP Birdies for Heart was one of the fundraising activities which took place at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, with all proceeds going to Children’s Health Foundation to support cardiac research and care of children with congenital heart disease from London and across Southwestern Ontario.
